Dolce

Dolce
Location: Kek Chuan Road, Georgetown, Penang
Date of Visit: 16th November 2013
>> On a rainy Saturday night right after dinner, family members yet again have the itch of having coffee for desserts and that's how we ended up at Dolce. A brand new coffee and desserts cafe ran by a young entrepreneur. My bro-in-law eventually knows well the store owner as he used to be an apprentice of his.
You would probably miss the place if you don't look properly because the cafe doesn't really have a big sign out on the street. The area is also not a popular hang out spot at night and it's further damned due to the collapsed antenna from the UMNO building a few months back. Due to lack of marketing and promotion of the cafe, its business started off pretty slow and from what I can presume, their business would rely on the words of happy customers who visited the cafe.
Upon entering the cafe, we were greeted with plenty of happy smiles from its employees. The owner came welcoming us and straight away introduced us what's nice and told us what to avoid. We've ordered a Mix Fruit cake, a Chocolate Banana cake, a Chocolate Hazelnut cake and a Blueberry Cheesecake. For drinks, the usual Cafe Latte for those who drank coffee while I opted for a pot of the Morgentau tea while my sister ordered a pot of Pear and Peach tea. During our visit, the cafe looks pretty packed.
The cafe has seats indoors and outdoors. They also have more seats on the upper floors. And also the cafe's filled with mouse. Yes! Mouse! Drawings of mouse can be seen around the cafe. The owner told us that the concept of the wall paintings comes from Pixar's animation Ratatouille. Follow the trail of mouse and you'll see the biggest mouse in the end. Let's start with a review over the drinks. Based on the drinkers feedback, their cup of Joe lacks the punch and richness.
As for my tea, Morgentau is actually flavored green tea with mango citrus flavor. It tastes great, non-sugar added and you get a little pot of heavenly flavored tea. Pear and Peach tea is actually flavored white leaf tea. Again, it's flavored tea so sugar is not necessary. Just let it simmer in the hot water and sip slowly. Only then you will be able enjoy those flavored teas. However, I find that having the flavored tea with desserts doesn't really blend. Probably the tea is so heavily infused that putting a spoonful of sugary goodness kills it.
For desserts, their Banana Chocolate cake hits the spot of what I call a great piece of cake! The banana taste isn't over-powering the chocolate and the chocolate is smooth and moist. The bottom layer of vanilla sponge mellows down the richness of the chocolate top. The owner mentions that it's quite a seller. I can understand why! You wouldn't realize that the slice will be gone in seconds and a second serving would be necessary. It's just that darn good!! As for the rest, it only reaches par.
What fell below par would be their Chocolate Hazelnut cake. That's because it was dry and tough. Chocolate wise, it's too much chocolate under a single spoon. I know some will probably say that it's nothing compared to a triple chocolate cake. As a happy customer from the visit, I've also spread the word to my fellow colleagues to go and have a drink there. They came back with very positive comments. That means the cafe continue to improve overtime with better line of drinks and desserts on its menu.

Coffee Journey

Coffee Journey
Location: Island Plaza, Tanjung Tokong, Penang
Date of Visit: 14th November 2013
>> Island Plaza in the Tanjung Tokong area used to be a hip and chic shopping plaza where it carries Metrojaya, MNG, GSC Cinema, Times Bookstore, KFC, Starbucks, Coffee Bean and even Cold Storage. The glory days of this place was over when Gurney Plaza opens.
It took a further beating when Straits Quay nearby opens. Many past tenants said that the complex management is nothing but a bunch of blood suckers as they provided poor management service, expensive rental for each shop lots and cocky attitude which drove potential business opportunities away. The plaza was then taken over by a Singapore-owned conglomerate and it went through major renovations in 2011 which drives even more businesses off as customers stop visiting the plaza.
Some business maintained their position in the plaza, while some newer ones arrived. Coffee Journey, a new coffee place where the shop lot used to be operated by Starbucks, took over the place after been left vacated after the major renovations. This little coffee place opens for business in the early 2013. The shop owner runs Lighthouse Coffee at Logan Heritage Building in the town area, hence you may find some similarities in the smell and taste of the coffee between this place and Lighthouse Coffee.
However, what's interesting about this place is that you will find a more focused selection of coffee menu than the one in Lighthouse Coffee which has a large selection of variety, something that would really confuse coffee drinkers from time to time what you've had from your last visit. Typical as it may sound but I myself, am not a coffee drinker. However I loved to visit cafe's and I would really adore even more a cafe that serves great tea lattes. Coffee Journey does! They serve a great cup of Earl Grey Tea Latte.
My last visit made us ordered two Cafe Latte's, one Earl Grey Tea Latte, and a slice of Carrot Cake. I find their selection of cakes on their display fridge not tempting at all as it looks dull and small sliced. The price of each slice is rather pricey too. Overall, the drinks were good, not to mention my tea latte made me jumped with joy for every sip I took. For those who stays in the Tanjung area, you don't have to go all the way to town to get a good cup of coffee. They are there for a reason which is to serve you a great cup of coffee.
