Coffee Journey
Location: Island Plaza, Tanjung Tokong, Penang
Date of Visit: 14th November 2013
>> Island Plaza in the Tanjung Tokong area used to be a hip and chic shopping plaza where it carries Metrojaya, MNG, GSC Cinema, Times Bookstore, KFC, Starbucks, Coffee Bean and even Cold Storage. The glory days of this place was over when Gurney Plaza opens.
It took a further beating when Straits Quay nearby opens. Many past tenants said that the complex management is nothing but a bunch of blood suckers as they provided poor management service, expensive rental for each shop lots and cocky attitude which drove potential business opportunities away. The plaza was then taken over by a Singapore-owned conglomerate and it went through major renovations in 2011 which drives even more businesses off as customers stop visiting the plaza.
Some business maintained their position in the plaza, while some newer ones arrived. Coffee Journey, a new coffee place where the shop lot used to be operated by Starbucks, took over the place after been left vacated after the major renovations. This little coffee place opens for business in the early 2013. The shop owner runs Lighthouse Coffee at Logan Heritage Building in the town area, hence you may find some similarities in the smell and taste of the coffee between this place and Lighthouse Coffee.
However, what's interesting about this place is that you will find a more focused selection of coffee menu than the one in Lighthouse Coffee which has a large selection of variety, something that would really confuse coffee drinkers from time to time what you've had from your last visit. Typical as it may sound but I myself, am not a coffee drinker. However I loved to visit cafe's and I would really adore even more a cafe that serves great tea lattes. Coffee Journey does! They serve a great cup of Earl Grey Tea Latte.
My last visit made us ordered two Cafe Latte's, one Earl Grey Tea Latte, and a slice of Carrot Cake. I find their selection of cakes on their display fridge not tempting at all as it looks dull and small sliced. The price of each slice is rather pricey too. Overall, the drinks were good, not to mention my tea latte made me jumped with joy for every sip I took. For those who stays in the Tanjung area, you don't have to go all the way to town to get a good cup of coffee. They are there for a reason which is to serve you a great cup of coffee.
